Working with the members and trustees of the Church and with the cooperation of its mortgage holder, which initially resisted the process, the Orantes Law Firm succeeding in obtaining an order from the Hon. Bankruptcy Judge Peter Carroll confirming the Church's plan of reorganization. Among other things, the Plan discharges approximately 97% of the Church's unsecured debt and saved the Church building. The Church was only days away from being evicted from its church building when the Orantes Law Firm was retained last year. The only unfortunate thing was that the church did not retain the law firm earlier as that might have allowed the Church to save many of its other real estate properties, too.
Churches and other non-profit organizations, unlike ordinary corporations or other businesses, can accomplish a more thorough reorganization and discharge more debt through a Chapter 11 case because they do not need to satisfy certain requirements.
